Sanitation Depot

Proposed 25th Street Sanitation Depot

In 2012 the City announced that a new sanitation depot garage would be built in our neighborhood as part of a larger deal between the City, Sloan Kettering and the City University of New York. The planned garage is to be located on the current site of the Brookdale Nursing School which is located on the block bounded by East 25th Street to East 26th Street from the FDR Highway to First Avenue. The building is planned to be a LEED Certified Green Building. The project, first announced in 2012 had an  with an estimated completion date of 2016, was delayed due to Superstorm Sandy.

WTA and Waterside Management vigorously oppose this garage and are organizing resources to fight it. WTA, Waterside’s owner, Richard Ravitch and general manager, Peter Davis, have met with elected officials to voice our opposition to this project.

To date the Draft Scope of Work has been provided by the City to which WTA and the Brookdale Neighborhood Coalition have responded. The next step is for the city to issue their Draft Environmental Statement which will includes responses to the issues raised by the community.
